I've always loved Russian inspired fashion, perhaps partially because of my origins, but also because it is so rich and powerful, yet so romantic. From the traditional embroideries, the soviet military inspired look to the usage of fur, the Slavic style has inspired numerous designers throughout the years; Gabrielle Chanel in the early years of her career, Yves Saint Laurent, John Galliano, Dior and Kenzo to name a few. Some fashion historians believe it is the Russian's, who migrated to Paris in 1917, that tought the Parisians how to dress.
On November 16th is the long awaited release of the Anna Karenina film, an adaptation from Leo Tolstoy's 1877 novel of the same name. I've personally been looking forward to this film mostly to view the 1870s, Russian inspired costumes, designed by Jacqueline Durran.
Here is a sneak peek of Keira Knightley as Anna Karenina.
